ModelCVS Activities in 2009

Vienna, Nov 22th, 2009

After five years of work, ModelCVS by APG reached the desired maturity. Research and development over the last five years shows now its first results. During those years we had to overcome various difficulties. Research and development is a challenging task for a small company, since the results all must be easily usable in practical life and may cost from time to time much. A published paper is an eligible result for an academic work but not necessarily so in the practical life. A half done research and development work is almost of no value for the industry. The added value of such unfinished outcomes is not valuable in financial terms.

In 2009, APG has taken many efforts to disseminate ProgGen’s usage and advantages. The early stages of a tool (software product) is always difficult. The acceptance by customers, the missing references, since one customer has to buy the tool first. This year, in three conferences we presented the tool. Those conferences were 'info exchange' in Mannheim, EDGE EMEA in Amsterdam and EDGEucate in Dallas Texas, the fourth one is planned to be the IT conference of Turkey in Ankara. Nowadays 50+ companies are interested in our modeling solution and are working with us to evaluate and implement ProgGen! After each meeting with the customers we could gain new leads and successful business contacts. You can read about the details of ModelCVS by APG here www.modelcvs.com.

At the same time we extended our sales team with new partnerships. In the near future, I am going to write about those partnerships which enhance our service quality significantly. After those service alliance agreements, a good educated team of technicians serve our customers almost everywhere in the world with the highest possible accurateness. In the remaining part of the year, we plan to proceed with our research and development activities and supervise our customers and begin with new projects.

Another very important –maybe the most important one- achievement of this year for our company is the status of a technology partner with Computer Associates . This confirms us for all the research and development activities of the recent years.

If you want to read about the outcomes of this period, follow our user group 'Software Modernization and Modelbased Software Development' (SOMOMOSODE) in the social networking platform XING (membership is free). At the same time we are also in twitter. There you can follow our activities under

Paper for Ankara: Software Modernization through Model Transformation

The presentation of ModelCVS by APG at CA World 2008 was a great success.

Vienna, Nov 24th, 2008

Three sessions and the presence in the exhibition center on the technology floor brought many qualified leads, which will be followed by us during the following days. There were many constructive feedbacks which we will be considered for further development. The exhibition space for CA World 2010 in Los Angeles is already reserved. 'CA World Today' magazine printed an article about us. Questions regarding ModelCVS by APG can be sent to

ModelCVS – Discover and Leverage Your CA Gen Assets

Vienna, Nov 7th, 2008

ARIKAN Productivity Group (APG) is a CA partner and IT technology provider. APG's ECLIPSE based tool series "ModelCVS by APG" is a new unique and awarded*) technology, which enables tool integration through transparent transformation of models between metamodels representing the modelling languages of different tools. A metamodeling toolkit captures metamodels of the participating tools and generates adaptors for seamless exchange of tool data. Below the components of the first commercial available version of this tool:

  • ProgGen: Software modernization is the process of understanding and evolving existing software assets. ProgGen is a Software Modernization tool. The generic software translation approach - based on OMG’s software Architecture Driven Modernization - has in its first version the transformation capability from a PL/1-CICS-Embedded SQL system to one or more CA Gen model(s). The result is an effective, low cost transformation process for software modernization.
  • CA Gen EMF Query (Reporting) Tool: The CA Gen Query Tool is a generic implementation based on the EMF Query functionality for CA Gen metamodel instances. Any kind of query can be designed and executed dynamically and can be repeated any time later.
  • UML Diagrams for CA Gen: The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a graphical language for visualizing, specifying and constructing the artifacts of a software-intensive system. Some organizations have UML as their strategic modelling language or use UML for information exchange with other organizations. Using ModelCVS UML2 diagrams can be generated from CA Gen models. Those diagrams depict the information about CA Gen models in some other comprehensive and significant way. This first version supports class and state chart machine diagrams.
  • SWT Client Generation for Gen: SWT is the software component that delivers native widget functionality for the Eclipse platform in an operating system independent way. It is analogous to AWT/Swing in Java with a difference - SWT uses a rich set of native widgets.
Using this additional generation capability CA Gen C/S Window Applications can be generated for SWT. Doing this they can be executed in any JVM environment like Linux.

ModelCVS components visualize different aspects of your IT assets or convert them into different models such that you can easily discover their real strategic value.

Model Transformation: Effective Anti-Aging Pill for Your Legacy Software

Vienna, July 17th, 2008

A legacy system is an old computer system or application program that continues to be used because the user (typically an organization) does not want to replace or redesign it.

Legacy systems are considered to be potentially problematic by many software engineers for several reasons. Legacy systems are often hard to maintain, improve, and expand because there is a general lack of understanding of the system. The designers of the system may have left the organization, leaving no one left to explain how it works. Such a lack of understanding can be exacerbated by inadequate documentation or manuals getting lost over the years. Integration with newer systems may also be difficult because new software may use completely different technologies.
Despite these problems, organizations can have compelling reasons for keeping a legacy system, such as:

- The costs of redesigning the system are prohibitive because it is large, monolithic, and/or complex.
- The system requires close to 100% availability, so it cannot be taken out of service, and the cost of designing a new system with a similar availability level is high.
- The way the system works is not well understood. Such a situation can occur when the designers of the system have left the organization, and the system has either not been fully documented or such documentation has been lost.
- The user expects that the system can easily be replaced when this becomes necessary.
- The system works satisfactorily, and the owner sees no reason for changing it; or in other words, re-learning a new system would have a prohibitive attendant cost in lost time and money.

VISION BECOMES REALITY

Vienna, May 2nd, 2008
ModelCVS by APG's first component is commercial available since February 2008. The second consecutive component ProgGen is a Legacy Modernization tool. In our case it is a code transformation framework. Legacy Modernization is a crucial issue for any institution, which has to use IT assets over a longer period. Typically banks, insurance companies, industrial organizations use their IT infrastructure and programs over many decades. Todays COBOL or PL/1 programs of such institutions stem from 1980 s and cannot be replaced easily. Triggered by the technological change, those companies face some challenges like internet business or availability of the same functionality across different platforms. This also the reason, why more and more companies overtake their IT assets into CA Gen. ProgGen converts a whole system from one language into another. The first version of ProgGen supports conversions from PL/1 (with CICS and embedded SQL) into CA Gen. Any other system as target or source can be supported on demand.

delivers a model transformation insfrastructure with following components

ModelCVS Summary 2007
Short summary of the ModelCVS by APG activities in 2007

In April 2007 CA World took place in Las Vegas, Nevada . We had the opportunity to present the current status of our tool "ModelCVS by APG". The evaluation done by the audience and contacts to new customers were very encouraging. This year’s Motto of the conference was 'innovation'. In this context an article about our project was chosen to be published in the conference newsletter CA WORLD today April 25, 2007. As Mr. Guy Kawasaki told in his keynote address, something can be considered as an innovation if it leads to a 10 times 20 times improvement in related areas. ModelCVS by APG fullfils this criteria for tool integration.

ModelCVS by APG at EDGE Conferences
We were present at the two EDGE conferences in London, UK and in Dallas, TX and presented our project ModelCVS by APG. The feedback by the audience was once again very positive. Especially in Dallas, - hometown of CA Gen – many members of the core CA Gen Development Team visited our two sessions. In the first hour we showed examples, how ModelCVS by APG is functioning in the second hour we talked a little bit about the theory behind it. During the discussion after the two hours and at the subsequent user meeting the customers could get answers to their specific questions.

ITIL – Application Management and ModelCVS by APG in Mannheim
Tool Integration via model transformation is a key issue of an effective software development. In Mannheim we covered techniques for Tool interconnectivity and demonstrated how tool integration accelerates software development tasks. Using CA Gen and Eclipse connectivity as a case study, the audiences have learnt about ModelCVS by APG. Primarily the Infrastructure for a CA Gen - Eclipse Integration was discussed. But not only Eclipse can be part of an integrated tool chain any other software development tool can also be part of the tool chain. As Eclipse is a very widely used open source Software Development Environment, our first Tool Integration case study covers CA Gen EMF connectivity. The audience had the opportunity to learn techniques and to get examples for some use cases using CA Gen and Eclipse.
